I saw War of the Worlds exactly 11 years ago today. What made that fitting was the scene with the multiple lightning strikes and Tom Cruise's character says that it's like the Fourth of July. 🙂
Looking back, 2005 was indeed a dark year for Spielberg. There was this movie, as you pointed out, and there was also his cold and brutal thriller Munich, which I consider to be a near-masterpiece and the best film he has made so far in this century.
