This movie is such a favorite in my family that Mr. Thorkelson has become something of an inside joke. "That guy looks kind of like Mr. Thorkelson, doesn't he?". Certainly made my top 10.
Unfortunately we didn't have enough variety for 50! More than usual, we had the same 3 or 4 in the majority of lists. Not a bad thing, but it means past 42 or 43 on the rankings movies started to have only one vote, and one of the requirements is that at least two people separately vote for a film to get on the list.
Good selections! I've seen 34 out of 40 films mentioned. It was a great decade for black-and-white films (superb Technicolor films were sadly scarce when compared to the 1950s). Though, I noticed that "Mrs. Miniver" doesn't have the right still image.
The Lady Eve (my #3) actually made it?! 🤯 I haven't been this blissfully surprised since my #1 movie of the 21st century, Attack of the Clones, made it into the first poll. That gives me hope. I'm also surprised by the top 3. I thought that It's a Wonderful Life would be #1 (it was my #1 pick) and Citizen Kane would be #2. I underestimated Casablanca.
I feel dumb about forgetting The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I remembered it just a few days ago so I figured it was too late to re-submit my list. It would have been my #8 or #9, taking Bicycle Thieves off my list, so it wouldn't have made that much of a difference. I'm glad to see them both on here. This is the first (and I'm betting) only time that all of my picks made it on the final list! I am deeply satisfied.
I forgot several of these existed! I now need to go on Letterboxd and add them to my watched list. Like I Remember Mama.
As an aside, I once played Peter Thorkelson the undertaker in a high school production of I Remember Mama!
