When I started this blog with Joe Wilson back in 2023, one of the ideas I had was to start sending out a weekly post that included movie news with some of my own commentary.
But it was a strange time for movie news and the industry at large as we were still in the midst of the uncertainty of the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes, and most projects were getting pushed to the next year anyway.
Now, in 2026, we are living in much more interesting times for Hollywood. Three of the highest-grossing films of the year are original films, with The Odyssey taking the #2 (!) spot (for now). The world domination of both superhero films and even trusted IPs like Star Wars is no longer a given: a lot hinges on these next two Avengers movies (the first of which notably will lack Tom Holland).
So, without further ado, let’s dive in to some of the biggest news as of late.
‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ Reveals Its First Images…and Some Controversial Casting
One look at Netflix’s stock price as of late will tell you the company has not been on the up-and-up in the past year or so:
This is partially due to lack of user engagement, major competition from increased YouTube-watching on TVs, and the company’s failure to absorb Warner Bros last year.
But the real reason is: Netflix movies are quite bad. So much so that the company removed the labels they used to have on movies and shows that were “Netflix originals”.
This is partially because almost no major directors want to work with a service that refuses to put their movies in theaters. So all you end up with is slop catered to lowest-common-denominator.
So it’s no surprise that after the monstrous success of Barbie, director Greta Gerwig was able to strike a deal with Netflix to not only make a Narnia movie1 but also to get a wide release in theaters nationwide, a first for a Netflix film.2
That is how desperate they are to retain talent.
